The point of Animal Crossing is that there is none

what's the point of animal crossing

Cute, comfy, calming.

While games have always had inherent loops or hooks to gameplay, the modern stock has started to blow things out of proportion.

Nearly every AAA experience is saturated with some sort of progression constantly calling to be chased.

Games, as a result, are much less about playing to play than working through endless checklists. It’s why a series like Animal Crossing, one of Nintendo’s most unique, never ceases to confuse in terms of its appeal.

Animal Crossing’s mix of real world connection, aimlessness, and mellowed atmosphere means its something that’s always flown in the face of well timed rewards and spikes of pleasure.

Mindfulness replaces an eye for what’s ahead and it’s all the better for it.

Does Animal Crossing have a story mode?

animal crossing story mode

Quick answer: No, Animal Crossing: New Horizons does not have a story mode in the strictest sense. The game falls under the umbrella of the life sim genre. Most of what you buy, find, create, and do is on your own terms.

Whether you’re playing on Xbox One, PS4, or Switch, games typically fall into one of two categories – narrative based or multiplayer focused experiences. Animal Crossing: New Horizons, a game that has lit the world on fire in these off kilter times, bucks this trend. Similar to Minecraft or The Sims, Animal Crossing is absent of a well defined story mode. Instead, the crux of the game is personal expression, progression, and finding a way of (virtual) life that works for you.

Getting feet wet with mobile photography

Messing about with photography is something I’ve wanted to do for quite some time. Recently, perhaps aided by COVID-19 in some strange way, I’ve taken to snapping photos on my quarantine walks.

The photos below are similar thematically and show my soft spot for the colors of dawn. Working with low light is also something I’ve found to be a lot of fun.

Paper Mario returns to the Switch

Completely out of left field, Nintendo announced today that Paper Mario: The Origami King will release exclusively for the Switch on July 17, 2020. The first game in the series since 2016 (Paper Mario: Color Splash), the latest entry in the series looks to be equal parts unexpected and zany. One might say that the aesthetic and styling, at times, looks to be reminiscent of Sony’s Tearaway.

COVID-19 makes its own time

Tossing, turning, and chewing on the unknown was the bulk of my internal life at the onset of COVID-19. It still is to a lesser extent. Like others, the rollout of the virus began with an indifference that quickly morphed to waves of panic. Ballooning cases in the US, economic catastrophe, and a statewide shutdown made sure of this.
