Chromecast with Google TV Constant Wi-Fi Disconnects

Update 9/30/25: This seems to be a well documented issue (this is the most recent reddit thread I’ve found). Restricting the Chromecast to 2.4 GHz only temporarily resolved the issue. DFS channels as well as IPv6 are also disabled on my router.

Some months ago, I purchased a Chromecast with Google TV (HD) at Target. The model was on sale and my aging Sony X800D slowed to a crawl when using the built in Google TV functionality. Considering the price point, it was perfectly acceptable and much, much faster than the TV itself. Eventually, I ran into continuous Wi-Fi disconnects.

The fix that worked for me was wireless MAC address filtering (pushing it to the 2.4 GHz band exclusively). If you have a modern ASUS router, these are the steps you can take to achieve this:

  • Navigate to the web portal of your router
  • Click “Wireless” under “Advanced Settings” in the left column
  • Click the “Wireless MAC Filter” tab at the top of the page
  • Select 5 GHz for Band under “Basic Config”
  • Select Yes for Enable Mac Filter under “Basic Config”
  • Select Reject for MAC Filter Mode under “Basic Config”
  • Under “MAC filter list”, select the Chromecast client using the dropdown arrow
  • Click the + symbol under Add / Delete

If your Chromecast does not show up, you can view your entire client list (including offline clients) by navigating to “Advanced Settings” > “LAN” > “Manually Assigned IP around the DHCP list”. Once you’re here click the dropdown arrows under “Client Name (MAC Address)”. There will be an option for “Show Offline Client List”. Clicking any client will populate the MAC address which will allow you to easily copy and paste to the MAC address filtering section.

It’s important that you also clear the 5 GHz band network from your Chromecast as well as manually restart the Chromecast (via the menu and not turning it off and on again). I have the suspicion that the root of the issue is the Chromecast wanting to hop between bands/access points and it will continue to try to do this if there’s another saved network. This tendency will persist through the MAC filter.
